Elastec › Turbidity Curtains

Turbidity Curtains, or Silt Curtains, Silt Barriers, or Turbidity Barriers, as they are sometimes called, are floating barriers used in marine construction, dredging, and remeditation projects to control the silt and sediment in a body of water. Elastec Turbidity Curtains can be set up to keep construction areas in compliance and protect the environment. Click here for application questions.

Custom Turbidity Curtains

We can custom build floating turbidity barriers to fit the job. Tapered silt curtains, barge curtains, dive curtains, swim curtains, net curtains, and baffle curtains are just some of the custom projects we manufacture.

Siltmax Silt Curtain

Type 1 Turbidity Curtains are floating barriers designed to control sediment and runoff at construction sites in calm waters. They are designed for easy deployment and meet the requirements of the Federal and State clean water requirements.

Type 2 Fastwater Turbidity Curtain

Type 2 Turbidity Curtain is a durable curtain that is suitable for mild currents, waves, and wind. These barriers are designed for the control of silt and sediment during marine construction and dredging. They are available in impermeable and permeable options.

Type 3 Ruffwater Turbidity Curtain

Type 3 Turbidity Curtain is suitable for use in tidal zones, rivers, and bays. Different filter cloths can be used to accommodate the design of the project and the type of sediment present. This type of curtain is well suited for the construction of bridges, intakes, and pipelines and is available in permeable and impermeable options.

For use in swales, canals, shallow ponds, and marshes the SiltMax Staked Turbidity Curtain can control storm water runoff on jos sites or silt in shallow water less than 30 inches

Turbidity Curtain Anchors

We offer a full range of accessories to facilitate the deployment, anchoring and securing of these floating structures.

The implementation of the Clean Water Act and Phase II of the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) has led to major changes in operating procedures for the industrial sector. It has encouraged major product development by Elastec in order to keep up with our customers needs and allow them to remain in compliance with these regulations.

ELASTEC Turbidity Curtain installed near Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Turbidity Curtain Install

Elastec Type III Ruffwater Screen was installed June 1 - 2, 2015 near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA. as part of the Crissy Field Drainage Improvement Project. Duane Bennish and Bill Andrus of the Cocoa branch were on site to help with the installation.

There was an existing drainage pipe that extended out into the water, but over time, the beach widened and the pipe was getting sediment in it and becoming blocked. It was difficult to clean out, so the remedy was to extend the outfall back out into the water.

Extension of the pipe will increase drainage capacity, reduce sand build up, and alleviate flooding issues. A “U” shape of curtain encompasses the worksite so that any disturbed sediment will not pollute the surrounding water, wildlife, and marine life. The install was high profile and was monitored by the media, California DOT, and marine biologists. Crissy Field falls under the National Park Service jurisdiction.

"It performed like a champ!"

"On behalf of Caltrans I would sincerely like to thank you and your crew for our turbidity control curtain. Thank you to the Elastec family for assisting Caltrans in designing a Best Management Practice that has been both cost effective and has exceeded our expectations in performance.

Recently I was observing the waves onsite crashing against the shoreline - the winds were so strong they were blowing our plastic covers about; however, the turbidity curtain remained intact and during dredging operations there was no visible notice of turbidity outside of the curtain! It performed like a champ!
