OIL SPILL EQUIPMENT

Elastec manufactures and supplies oil spill equipment for containing, controlling, recovering, transferring and temporarily storing oil during inland, fastwater, and offshore response operations.

Our oil spill cleanup equipment includes oil containment boom, oil skimmers, boom reels, BoomVane™ deployment systems, pumps and hydraulic power units, portable storage tanks, vacuum systems, work boats, response trailers and containers, fire boom, dispersant application systems and specialized fast-water recovery equipment. Elastec also supplies absorbents and equipment for monitoring spill response operations. For a broader look at how these components work together, see our complete oil spill response systems.

Equipment can be selected individually or configured as part of a complete oil spill response system based on the operating environment, type of oil, expected spill volume, available resources, and response objectives.

Oil Skimmers

Oil skimmers recover oil floating on the surface of water. Elastec offers drum, grooved-disc, weir, belt, brush and suction skimming systems for different oil viscosities, water conditions and recovery requirements.

Skimmers are available for applications ranging from small inland and industrial spills to coastal and offshore recovery operations.

Oil Containment Boom

Oil containment boom is used to contain, control, divert and concentrate floating oil so it can be recovered more effectively. Elastec offers containment boom for a range of inland, nearshore and offshore conditions, along with boom accessories and custom configurations for specific applications.

American Marine, a division of Elastec, has manufactured oil containment boom since 1967.

Boom Reels

Boom reels simplify the storage, deployment and recovery of longer lengths of oil containment boom. Elastec offers manual and hydraulically powered reel systems for inflatable boom and compatible foam-filled boom.

Reels can also be configured with trailers, power packs and other equipment to create mobile boom deployment systems.

BoomVane

BoomVane is a boom deployment device designed to help position containment boom in moving water and vessel-based response operations.

By using the force of water moving past the device, BoomVane can hold boom away from a vessel or deployment point and can reduce the need for a second vessel in certain response configurations.

Oil Spill Absorbents

Oil spill absorbents can be used to pick up and retain oil during spill response. They are commonly used for small spills, localized cleanup and residual oil that remains after mechanical recovery.

Elastec supplies absorbent booms, pads, sweeps, pillows and other oil spill cleanup products, as well as response kits for smaller waterways and spill applications.

Pumps & Power Units

Pumps move recovered oil, water and other liquids between skimmers, tanks and other parts of a recovery system. Elastec offers pumps for a range of liquid viscosities and response applications.

Hydraulic power units provide power for compatible oil skimmers, pumps, boom reels and other response equipment.

Portable Storage Tanks

Recovered oil has to be temporarily stored after it is collected. Elastec portable storage tanks provide options for temporary liquid storage on land or aboard vessels.

Available configurations include deck tanks, pillow tanks, framed QuickTanks and towable bladders.

Vacuum Systems

Portable vacuum systems can recover oil, liquids, solids and sludge in locations where conventional vacuum trucks may be difficult or impractical to use.

Elastec offers trailer-mounted and portable vacuum systems for oil spill recovery as well as industrial and municipal cleanup applications.

Response Trailers & Containers

Response trailers and equipment containers keep oil spill equipment organized, protected and ready for transport to a response site.

Elastec offers customizable trailers, ISO containers, racks and storage systems that can be configured around the equipment required by a response plan or operating location.

Dispersant Application Systems

Elastec offers spray systems designed for applying approved oil spill dispersants when dispersant use is part of an authorized response strategy.

Systems include portable vessel-mounted equipment and specialized configurations designed for different offshore response requirements.

Fire Boom

Fire-resistant oil containment boom is specialized equipment used during approved in-situ burning operations.

Elastec manufactures fire boom systems designed to contain oil during controlled burning operations where in-situ burning is an appropriate and authorized response method.

Aerial Surveillance

Situational awareness can be an important part of managing an oil spill response. Elastec offers the D360 portable UAS monitoring system for viewing and sharing live field video from unmanned aerial systems.

The portable system can be used as a mobile monitoring and command resource during field operations.

Work Boats

Elastec aluminum work boats can support oil spill recovery, boom handling, equipment transport and other marine response operations.

The work boat line includes multipurpose vessels, landing craft and vessels configured for specialized oil spill recovery and waterway maintenance applications.

How to Choose Oil Spill Cleanup Equipment

The right oil spill equipment depends on the spill scenario rather than any single product or recovery rate.

Important factors include:

  • Operating environment: industrial site, river, lake, harbor, coastal water, offshore water or fast-moving water
  • Oil properties: oil type, viscosity and expected condition of the oil during response
  • Containment requirements: where the oil needs to be stopped, diverted or concentrated
  • Recovery requirements: how much oil may need to be recovered and the practical recovery rate required
  • Transfer and storage: how recovered oil will be pumped, transferred and temporarily stored
  • Deployment resources: available personnel, vessels, vehicles, cranes, hydraulic power and other support equipment
  • Access and logistics: how equipment will be transported, deployed, recovered and stored between incidents

Selecting these components together helps prevent one part of the recovery system from limiting the performance of the rest.

Build a Complete Oil Spill Response System

An oil spill recovery system is more than a skimmer.

A complete mechanical recovery package may include containment boom, a skimmer, pump, hydraulic power unit, hoses and fittings, temporary storage and the equipment needed to deploy, transport and operate the system.

The individual components should be matched to the expected operating conditions and to one another. A high-capacity skimmer, for example, provides little advantage if the pump or temporary storage cannot keep up with the amount of recovered liquid.

Elastec can help configure individual products or complete oil spill equipment packages around the conditions and response scenarios your organization is preparing for.
