Hydro-Fire® MkII System

Elastec is a world leader in the design and manufacture of fire boom. In the summer of 2010 we supported the effort in the Gulf of Mexico to minimize the impact from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill - our Hydro-Fire® Boom systems were extensively used in multiple controlled burns. Many of these patented water cooled fire booms have been operating with great success, reducing the shoreline impact.

By the time the well was capped over 400 burns were conducted  - with some lasting up to 12 hours in duration. On the 18th of June alone an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 barrels of oil was removed from the marine environment!

Elastec was mentioned across the country on news casts both on local and national levels -

Controlled burning is a valuable oil spill response tool that can eliminate large volumes of oil. During the DeepWater Horizon response 219,000 to 309,000 barrels of oil are estimated to have been removed from the marine environment in these controlled burns!  Over 400 burns were conducted using several different models of fire resistant oil boom. Our fire resistant barrier proved to be the most successful.

It has undergone rigorous burn trials by ourselves and other response organizations such as OHMSETT, SUPSALV and US Coast Guard. Hydro-Fire® Boom is an effective fire resistant boom to prevent the spread of oil fires on water.

The Hydro-Fire® Boom system offers the following advantages:
• Inflated boom design may be compactly stored on reels
• Reusable and easily stored
• Reel provides assisted deployment and recovery
• Rapidly deployable
• The MkII system includes newly improved fabric, water feed system and high flow water pump

In the mid 1980's we designed the first commercial fire resistant barrier available capable of containing burning oil at 2000° F. This was the first (practical and successful) boom that allowed "In-Situ" burning of oil spills on water. The burns include a test burn off the coast of Spitsbergen, Norway (1988), spillage from Exxon Valdez (1989), involvement with experimental burns off Newfoundland, Canada (1993), United Kingdom Southampton test burn (1996). Hydro-Fire Boom can be used as a floating fire proof barrier to prevent the spread of marine fires.

Over 60,000 ft / 18 km of our fire fire resistant boom has been supplied worldwide. Our original designs used ceramic floats (3M American Fireboom) and were later replaced by a reusable water cooled systems.
